Sonoma County Wine AVA’s

RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY AVA

The Russian River Valley is in Western Sonoma County, this is the second-largest river within the nine-county Greater San Francisco Bay Area.

Much of the Russian River Valley AVA is among California's coolest and foggiest AVAs (particularly in its southern and western portions). The cool growing season and long, slow ripening period promotes complexity and balance in the wines. As a result, Russian River Valley wines are widely respected, particularly those made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Despite the AVA's name, the river flows only through its northern edge – the majority of vineyards here are located on the plains between the towns of Windsor, Santa Rosa and Sebastopol.

The Russian River Valley AVA is at its warmest in its northeastern corner, around the town of Windsor. Here, Pinot Noir is replaced almost entirely by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Chardonnay is still prevalent here, although it makes richer and more tropical wines than those made in in the AVA's cooler southwestern corner.

Dry Creek AVA

Dry Creek Valley is a premium winegrowing region in northern Sonoma County, California where more than 150 winegrowers and 60 wineries produce wines of excellence from a wide variety of grapes, including the world-class zinfandel. This diversity is due to the unique characteristics of Dry Creek AVA, which comprises many different soil types, elevations and exposures to sun, wind and water, all within a narrow 16-by-2-mile valley.

Exploring Dry Creek Valley is pretty simple. Here, you’ll find two roads, five stop signs and 10,000 acres of endless beauty. Pop into a winery and shake hands with the owner while you taste through the current releases, or choose among a wide variety of experiences from vineyard hikes to blending classes to food-and-wine pairings and much more.

We also invite lovers of our wines to share our mission to preserve this valley’s pristine beauty. With more than 100 years of winegrowing history and multi-generational families farming much of Dry Creek Valley, we are distinctly aware of the importance of being good stewards of the land.
